Faramarz Sharifi

About the Architect

Faramarz Sharifi was born in 1936 in Tehran. In 1956, after completing his secondary education at Alborz High School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, majoring in architecture. During his student years, he worked at the studio of Professor Houshang Seyhoun and later joined Seyhoun’s private office. He further expanded his experience by working in various architectural firms, including those of Engineer Mohamedi, Engineer Sardari, Engineer Naser, and Litchfield Whiting Ban & Associates. Between 1961 and 1962, he designed several villas for private clients.

In 1963, after graduating with high distinction from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran, he joined the Iranian Telecommunications Company as the head of the Building Design Department. Shortly after, he established his own office. In 1968, in collaboration with Hashem Ebrahimi, he co-founded Artiman Consulting Engineers. With the necessary qualifications from the Planning and Budget Organization, the firm took on the design and supervision of numerous governmental and private projects, including:

– Automatic telephone exchange centers
– World Bank-funded schools in Iran (in collaboration with Farmanfarmaian and the Swedish company Skanska)
– Sar Cheshmeh Copper Mine
– Bark Rasht Factories
– Pars Tile Factories
– Foumanat Rasht Factories
– Shahbaf Carpet Weaving Factories in Rasht
– Urban planning, the central headquarters, and the club of the Iranian Navy in Tehran
– Iran Statistics Center
– Jam Kongan Residential Complex
– Comprehensive Al-Sadiq Factory in Mashhad
– 600-bed hospital for Iran Housing Company (in partnership with Schmid-Garden Eriksen)

As the CEO of Artiman Consulting Engineers, Sharifi played a significant role in leading the design and execution of these projects.

Sharifi had a deep passion for designing villas and residential homes. Even while managing large-scale projects, he continued working on residential designs after business hours in his office. This passion eventually led him to resign as CEO of Artiman Consulting Engineers in 1995, dedicating himself to his private office and collaborating with Hassan Tajeddin.

Faramarz Sharifi possesses strong sketching skills, particularly in landscapes, buildings, and automobiles. He has an in-depth understanding of Iranian architectural heritage and skillfully integrates its principles into contemporary designs using modern technology, while emphasizing simplicity in his architecture.

To date, he has designed and supervised over 200 houses, villas, residential complexes, and office buildings in Tehran, surrounding cities, northern Iran, and Michigan, USA. Most of these projects have been commissioned by private clients. Though he has rarely participated in architectural competitions, he has served as a judge for several prestigious events. His career highlights include:

– Receiving the Pirnia Medal in 2000
– Numerous interviews and published projects in architectural magazines
– Participation in sketch exhibitions in Tehran and Los Angeles
– Authoring a book on architecture
